This webinar, released as a recorded webinar in 2024, will review commonly used exercise prescription methods in cardiac rehabilitation programs across the United States including, Target Heart Rate Ranges developed from a maximal, or near maximal test, ranges calculated using a prediction equation, resting heart rate plus a fixed range, rating of perceived exertion, and the “talk test.” The advantages and limitations of each method will be discussed. Recommendations on how to maximize improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness will be made.
Learning Objectives:
1). Apply appropriate formulas to calculate a target heart rate range derived from a symptom limited stress test, e.g., Continuous Training, High Intensity Interval Training, etc.
2). Recognize the limitations of using age-based prediction equations for maximal heart rate in clinical populations.
3). Apply other exercise prescription methods, as appropriate, when data from a symptom limited stress test is not available.
