Description:

This half-day virtual educational course equips cardiopulmonary rehabilitation professionals with practical skills to manage diabetes safely and effectively in exercise-based care. Participants will learn to assess and respond to hypo- and hyperglycemia, determine when to initiate, modify, or hold exercise, and interpret patient symptoms in real time. The course also explores key diabetes and cardioprotective medication classes, nutrition strategies focused on balanced eating patterns, the use of CGM data to guide clinical decision-making, and programmatic approaches to diabetes management and programmatic approaches to diabetes management.  

Learning Objectives: 

1. Recognize appropriate actions for managing high and low blood glucose levels before and after exercise sessions.
2. Identify when to proceed with, modify, or hold exercise based on blood glucose values and patient symptoms.
3. Describe key classes of diabetes and cardioprotective medications and their implications for rehab care.
4. Apply practical nutrition strategies, including carbohydrate, protein, fat, and fiber selection, to support glycemic control.
